Kindness:K-3 Lesson Ideas

We Are All Unique

Read Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes and discuss the story including Chrysanthemum’s feelings about her name in the story.  Guide a discussion of what makes one unique and special.  Show students picture of the butterflies.  Discuss how the butterflies are different and how they are alike.  Explain that all the butterflies in the world have different color designs on their wings.  Even butterflies of the same species have small or minor differences in color.  Ask how butterflies are like people.   Write the word “special” on the board and discuss its meaning.  Ask if some butterflies like the monarchs are better than other butterflys.Pass out construction paper and ask students to draw the head and body of a butterfly on their paper.  Then have students partner with a classmate to trace their right foot on the left side of the butterfly body and their left foot on the right side of the butterfly body or remove their shoes and trace themselves.  After they finish tracing, have them draw pictures of things that are special about them or they like inside the butterfly wings

Kindness Freeze Tag:

Students will play a variation on freeze tag, however the only way to unfreeze anyone is to tell the student one nice character trait that they possess.

Create a Song

By singing these piggyback songs, children learn new words to familiar tunes. These songs emphasize kindness and sharing.

Peaceful Friends (tune “I’m a Little Teapot”)

We come to school and like to say,

“Care for one another every day.”

We learn together and we play

Peacefully every day.

Let’s Be Kind (tune “Frere Jacques”)

Let’s be kind, let’s be kind.

In our heart and in our mind.

To our family, to our friends.

Let’s be kind, let’s be kind.
